DISC is Under-Utilized

News flash! Most organizations do not know the power or overall usefulness of the DISC reports. This statement is true and has been proved true well corporate champions suddenly wake up and see the power of these proven and simple reports.

Most organizations use the DISC reports as an opening exercise, share some insight into the theory behind DISC, and expect the user to figure out how to use the report for their future success within the organization. Or, in some cases, hope an executive sees the benefit or application of the reports and sudden finds dollars in the budget to get their direct reports to take the DISC assessments.

In reality, the DISC assessment is a powerful tool that can be used in several important functions. Let me share the most important ones…

Key Uses or Application for DISC reports

  • Communication – DISC training will put effectiveness into the communication process. Our experience shows 80% of communication break downs within organizations, departments and peers is due to a lack of understanding of the impact of behavioral style. People want to assign blame for poor communication, when it is only a factor of a lack of understanding about styles and a lack of flexibility.
  • Conflict – Several smart HR practitioners have discovered the impact of behavioral style in conflict situations with individuals. Again, 75% to 80% of these conflict situations could be eliminated or controlled if more people understood the role of behavioral style. Again, intent and blame are assigned to others since the other person(s) are different.
  • Team Building – DISC is a core element within any team since it is the behavior each team member sees from all the other team members. Sometimes there are major differences leading to communication and conflict issues. Other times, everyone is the same behavioral style and group think becomes the norm with no one questioning anything within the group.
  • Matching Jobs to People – Yes, you can use DISC as part of the selection process – if you have created a job benchmark for the DISC patterns. This allows you to match the person to the requirements of the job. The key is – the better the match the longer term hire you will have. The mismatch leads to natural turnover since the person is using their natural weaknesses on the job and sustained success is difficult.
  • Consulting – When a consultant uses the DISC tools within a department, team, or group – they are looking for keys to the overall culture of the organization. Are the right people on the bus for the job required to perform?  Do you have a manager problem within a team or department? Do you have a system issue or a fear based organization? Are people working to win or playing not to lose their job? Good graph readers can see the answers to the above questions using the simple DISC assessment reports.
  • Coaching or Mentoring – Here is an opportunity to match people up and become effective. Eliminates the tendency of only working with people who are just like you! Or having expectations that are unrealistic due to style differences. When people understand the style difference and become masters of flexing and adapting their communication to the styles of others – again effectiveness is gained and return on investment in people pays huge dividends.
  • Best Management Practices – Using the DISC or style reports, a manager can learn the best methods to motivate and lead their teams. It also allows for a manager to place each person into positions designed to maximize their natural strengths thus performing at higher levels. This raises the performance of the entire team, when everyone on the team is using their natural strengths rather than their natural weaknesses.

There you have a list of the most important reasons to use DISC in your organization. Get someone who is experienced and knowledgeable with in-depth understanding of DISC. Most organizations rely upon people with only surface level understanding of DISC. Remember you always get what you pay for. Resist the temptation to go cheap here – it is too important to your organization.
