Adapt or Flex – Using the Right Word for Understanding

Recently, I was listening to several people talk about making their style match other people’s styles. Then I noticed the use of Adapt or adapting in one explanation and then using the word – flex – to describe the same situation.

It is time to understand the difference between these words, what they mean and how to use them for consistence reasons. So here is the way I look at these words and how they should be used in discussions and facilitation…

  1. Adapt or Adapting – this is a term to use when describing how a person adjusts their personal style to meet the requirements of their job or position. An example would be a naturally outgoing person who enjoys talking with others – adapts their style to work in an office on details about projects or finances rather than discussing with others. This is adapted behavior for a job.
  2. Flex or Flexing – this a term to use when describing how a person temporarily changes their behavioral style in order to communicate a message with another person who is behaviorally different. The key here is the change is only made to improve rapport and communication with another person. Here an example would be again our outgoing people person meeting with a task oriented person with little desire to freely talk about anything. Here our outgoing person reduces their use of gestures, speaks softly and focuses only about the task.

There you have it. Make a point to use the above words according to the situation and others will understand the purpose of adapting or flexing and when to use it to describe a situation involving behavioral style.

Note: This post is focused upon how to use the DISC assessments properly and improve the understanding and usefulness of the information by others.
